Segundo o Camões - Instituto da Cooperação e da Língua, o Português é a sexta língua mais falada do mundo com um total de 244 milhões de falantes em todo o mundo, sendo também a quinta mais utilizada na Internet e a terceira com maior incidência nas redes sociais Facebook e Twitter.
É de realçar que a posição do português nas listas das línguas com maior número de falantes varia, no entanto, ligeiramente, conforme os critérios das organizações.
O Observatório da Língua Portuguesa, por exemplo, que aponta, também, para 244,392 milhões de falantes, coloca o Português como a quarta língua mais falada do planeta, apenas ultrapassada pelo Mandarim, o Espanhol e o Inglês.
A nível de línguas europeias, a língua portuguesa é a terceira mais falada, apontada também por um estudo da Bloomberg, publicado em 2011, como a sexta língua do mundo mais usada nos negócios, pode ler-se no site do Observatório.
A Internet tem contribuído, igualmente, para aumentar a importância do Português, que é, atualmente, a quinta língua mais utilizada online por um total de 82,5 milhões de cibernautas, avançam dados do site Internet World Stats.
